An Intermediate Emergency First Aid Responder (OHS) is responsible for providing immediate first aid assistance during workplace injuries, illnesses, and emergency situations. This role supports the organisation’s Occupational Health and Safety programme by helping to protect employees, visitors, contractors, and others on site until professional medical help is available.
The purpose of the role is to respond quickly, calmly, and effectively when someone is injured or becomes ill at work. An Intermediate Emergency First Aid Responder is trained to assess the situation, provide appropriate first aid within their level of training, prevent the condition from worsening, and support emergency response procedures.
This role may include responding to incidents such as cuts, burns, fractures, sprains, fainting, breathing difficulties, shock, bleeding, workplace injuries, and other medical emergencies. The responder may also assist with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, use of first aid equipment, patient monitoring, and communication with emergency medical services where required.
A key part of the role is to remain calm, professional, and safety-focused during emergencies. The responder must first ensure that the scene is safe, protect themselves and others from further harm, and then provide care according to approved first aid procedures. They must act within their training, avoid unnecessary risk, and treat injured or ill persons with dignity and respect.
